The statistics indicate that one out of two men and one out of three women in America will have some type of cancer in their lifetime. A person over age fifty will have an eighty percent chance of having cancer. Most people think a single disease health insurance plan is not an economic value. I believe that cancer insurance has statistically become worth the cost of the premium.
Medical insurance premiums have a built in inflation rate of nine percent in addition to the national inflation rate. This reflects the cost increases of hospital and physician visits and liability costs. Many of the old cancer insurance plans paid 100% for chemo and 100% for radiation. Many of the later plans have limited payment for chemo and radiation. Cancer treatments have changed over the years and some plans became outdated. If you own a cancer plan this would be a good time to examine your coverage.
I have had Follicular Lymphoma for at least 7 years. I learned about it a little more than two years ago. I have been receiving treatment since then. We thought it was gone in 2007 but we discovered it had returned in February of this year and I started the treatments anew. The part one treatment was six rounds of chemo and twenty-five rounds of radiation. Since my body would not accept Rituxin, I ended up going to the hospital for this medication, then to the oncologist’s office for additional chemo treatments. The part I hospital treatment for chemo and the unexpected visits to the emergency room total twenty-six. The total bill for the hospitals, labs, physicians and tests was $325,377.77. The total for pharmacy is unknown.
The process of dealing with cancer certainly affects your life. Cancer will also affect your ability to work and earn a living. Replacement of this income is a serious consideration for any family. Next time you have a physical, hopefully soon, ask for a cancer oriented physical. Many cancers are found by accident. My second one was.
I started writing a book starting at the beginning with the first day I found the lump under my arm. I thought the book was finished but since the cancer has returned I am writing part II. I am now looking for a publisher. Below is a link to the first chapter of my book.
